Lentil Barley Burger

Tim, Emily and I ventured to Meridian Pint in Columbia Heights last week to size up the restaurant’s vegan fare. After scanning the menu, I noticed there were a few selections to choose from, including:

  • Fried Tofu with chili sauce as an appetizer
  • Fresh Vegetables with walnut and white bean dip as an appetizer
  • Three Bean Chili with roasted peppers and corn bread (must request no cheese)
  • Seasonal Salad with roasted butternut squash, apples, toasted pumpkin seeds & creamy cider dressing
  • Tofu Skewers with a ginger soy glaze
  • Grilled Polenta with wilted arugula and lentil & walnut salad
  • Grilled Tofu Sandwich marinated tofu, portobello, eggplant with roasted garlic aioli
  • Lentil Barley Burger house made vegan burger topped with caramelized onions and vegan cheese
  • Tofu Scramble with roasted potatoes for brunch

In addition, this restaurant offers a Meatless Item of the Day, which happened to be sweet potato quinoa cakes with ginger tomato compote. Since tofu, raw cut-up vegetables and vegetarian chili are easier to come by (and cook-up myself), I opted to order the lentil barley burger. I can appreciate a kitchen who cooks up its own vegan burger instead of keeping a frozen box of Boca burgers on-hand.

Overall, the meal was good – the burger fell a part and wasn’t incredibly flavorful but not bad at all for bar food. In addition to the house made burger, I ordered a side of sweet potato fries, which were incredibly yummy. What I really liked and appreciated about this place was the extensive beer menu and bar atmosphere. If you’ve ever struggled to find a hangout spot where both you and your meat-eating friends can eat and drink beer together, then this is the spot. The selection of vegan items to choose from on the menu is pretty robust compared to most bar hangouts, and I’m excited to try out more of the options next time I go.

Have you ever been to Meridian Pint? If so, what did you order and think about your meal?

I’d like more whole-food, vegan options such as mixtures of greens, other veggies, nuts, and beans. I avoid processed vegan food such as tofu and seitan. The sweet potato quinoa cakes sound good.

    • Dave Doctor – I recently watched Forks Over Knives on Netflix Instant Watch (a must-see, if you haven’t already) and it was a total reminder to eat healthier whole-food, vegan meals. What’s your favorite meal to cook? Cookbook favorites?

  2. I have been trying to get to the trivia nights on Wednesdays and enjoy the vegetarian friendly menu when I do. The bean/cheese quesadillas were actually tasty! Now, going mostly vegan for a few months, so happy to see your post on the vegan parts.

    • Pooja – that’s cool MP hosts trivia night, I didn’t know that. Will have to check it out. I bet you could still order the bean quesadillas and request Cheddar Daiya cheese as a substitute. It’s so nice that MP has fake cheese options!

  3. I remember the first time I went to Meridian Pint, back when it opened about a year and a half ago. My partner was wearing my DC*Vegan shirt, and the doorman saw it and started talking really excitedly about their vegan options. (They weren’t even serving food at that hour, but he brought us a menu just to look at for a future visit.) I’m not sure if this is still true, but at the time the owner and/or chef of Meridian Pint also had a hand in Asylum, and they were very excited to bring vegan food to a non-vegan crowd. It seems like their intention are really good and the selections you’ve listed sound great! I bet that if customers have suggestions or requests, they’d be very receptive to hearing them.

  4. I haven’t been a big fan of the vegan food at MP (my barley burger was really dry, and I tend to not love Daiya cheese) BUT, the vegan french toast at brunch is actually really good, and has a slight orange flavor, yum. Even my non vegan friends prefer it.
