More Vegan Options Please!
We have all done this…
You go to a restaurant, say with some friends or family, and this restaurant is most likely not very Vegan friendly. They probably have one token Vegan item on the menu, maybe a mediocre veggie burger or pasta primavera, hopefully not the dreaded “vegetable plate” (an assortment of steamed vegetables). All the while, your friends and family are being served delicious looking non-veg dishes, and you’re stuck with a Boca burger. The horror stories I’ve heard are myriad.
This happens to us Vegan folk all the time. We usually we don’t think much of it nor do we probably care to talk to a manager to inquire about adding more Vegan options to the menu. A lot of us think quietly to ourselves “its not a Veg restaurant so I don’t plan on coming back…” and we leave it at that!
Some thoughts to consider before you dismiss that sentiment of “I wish they had better options here!”: It’s true, it may not be a Veg friendly restaurant, but you are not the only Vegetarian or Vegan that has ever been there or will be there in the future. Our numbers are growing! Also, many aspiring Veggies visit these types of restaurants and when they don’t see any Veg items it can be a big blow to their move to Vegetarianism and hopefully Veganism. And this feeling of inconvenience or of limited availability can be a big deal breaker for those aspiring. And, perhaps the option of a meat-free dish could even be a door opener to some that haven’t even thought about Veg before. And lastly, if nothing else, it could simply be one meal that a meat eater forgo’s eating meat because that Veg dish sounds so delicious.
The more people see Vegan items on menus, the easier they consider is to eat Vegan, the more likely they are to stick with it or consider trying it….at least thats my thinking. I think things have definitely gotten better, as far as Vegan items at non-Veg restaurants go, but there are still a lot of places out there that don’t have much, if anything.
So where am I going with all this?
Well, next time your in this situation, don’t just walk away without saying a little something to let them know you would like to see more Vegan items. You don’t have to make a scene or even seek out the manager, if thats not your thing, just leave a little something behind…
…like the restaurant manager card, from Compassion Over Killing, telling the manager you love their restaurant and would like to see some more vegetarian and vegan options on the menu. The inside of the card includes some statistics about vegetarian’s and vegan’s as well as some info on checking out some veg recipes or even contacting COK for assistance.
I think these little cards are great, I am planning getting some soon to carry around with me. If you want some you can get them for FREE on COK’s website.
We would love to hear your thoughts on these cards or even your experiences of talking to non-Veg restaurants about getting more Vegan items on their menu.
