Meat-Free Week Preview: Casa Oaxaca

Starting next week, February 6, through February 13, Casa Oaxaca and sister restaurant Guajillo Grill are celebrating Meat-Free Week! They have created a delicious menu featuring “The Three Sisters” — corn, beans, and squash — the basic ingredients of indigenous Mexico.
Patrons joining Casa Oaxaca and Guajillo Grill during Meat-Free Week will enjoy a three-course menu, featuring items like grilled cactus paddles, black mole enchiladas, and hot chocolate thickened with masa and flavored with cinnamon and brown sugar. Personally, we can’t wait to try the Tres Leches cake, which Casa Oaxaca calls a “twist on our traditional sponge cake, soaked in coconut milk.” Mmm!

DC Vegan Drinks Meat-Free Week
The next DC Vegan Drinks is just about two weeks away! We will be straying from our usual later in month event and will be having the event February 9th for Meat-Free Week.
What is DC Vegan Drinks? DC Vegan Drinks is a monthly social networking event for people interested in sharing veganism and advocating for animal rights. Our mission is to bring together people from all walks of life (lawyers, students, small business owners, etc…) to build a stronger community and promote the sharing of resources. There is no requirement except for an interest in veganism, animal rights, and to have a little after-work fun.
We will be having DC Vegan Drinks at Meridian Pint for Meat-Free Week we will also be having special guest John Schlimm Author of “The Tipsy Vegan“. John will be signing books and we will also be featuring some of his recipes from his book (not sure yet what will be featured).
In The Tipsy Vegan, award-winning author John Schlimm brings together everyone’s two favorite hangouts – the kitchen and the bar — in one big love fest of unforgettable creations. A member of one of the oldest brewing families in the U.S. and author of the largest beer cookbook ever published, John knows a thing or two about boozing up his food. From this son of a butcher who came out on The Ellen DeGeneres Show as a pro-meatless, pro-vegetable loving kind of foodie, The Tipsy Vegan will showcase 75 recipes using favorites from the bar circuit — wine, beer, vodka, et al. — as key ingredients.
Next Drink: Tuesday February 9th from 7pm to 10pm
Where: Meridian Pint, 3400 11th St NW Washington D.C. 20010
Metro: Green Line, Columbia Heights

Sticky Fingers Goes to War Again
Henry Ellis once said, “There is nothing that war has ever achieved that we could not better achieve without it.” Clearly, Mr. Ellis never saw Cupcake Wars. The darling Food Network Show is once again featuring our beloved Sticky Fingers Sweets & Eats, and on Sunday, January 14th, you can join in on the fun. Founder Doron Petersan will be hosting a free viewing party, from 7 pm -10 pm, at Bourbon in Adams Morgan. The event will feature free cupcakes and, Doron promises, plenty of drunken heckling. Go cheer on the home team to victory!

Winter Restaurant Week
It’s Restaurant Week in the DMV! Unlike Meat-Free Week (how excited are you!), Restaurant Week can leave vegans out in the cold. Fortunately, there’s Chef Todd Gray to the rescue! At Watershed, vegans can order a three-course dinner of Soba Noodle Salad, Red Cabbage and Root Vegetable Spring Rolls, and Pineapple andMango Salad. Sounds delish!
We’re Gearing Up for a Meat-Free Three-Peat!
February 6th to 13th is DC’s third annual Meat-Free Week. Meat-Free Week is a week-long celebration of vegetarian and vegan foods, each day featuring a special at a different restaurant in the Washington area. Some restaurants offer specials on current vegan and vegetarian items or donate a percentage of sales to charity; others use the weekas an opportunity to debut new vegetarian items.
This year, the organizers of Meat-Free Week are extending an invitation to our readers to nominate restaurants that you would like to participate! Specials may be as simple as a free dessert with a vegetarian entrée, or as spectacular as a new vegan tasting menu. It doesn’t matter if the restaurant doesn’t offer veg foods yet — should the restaurant wish, chefs are available to help add new veg items or revamp their classics! All approved participating restaurants will receive a listing of their special and be included in all press releases. The “best of the best” will be highlighted in dedicated stories on DC Vegan.
If you are a restaurant interested in participating in Meat-Free Week or have additional questions, please email me, at amber at dcvegan dot com. I will happily work with you to design something unique and exciting to bring lots of attention to your restaurant during Meat-Free Week!

MTV’s Steve-O to Hold Book Signing to Benefit Vegan Charity
Saturday, December 3rd, Steve-O, the star of MTV’s Jackass and Wildboyz and ABC’s Dancing with the Stars will host a fundraiser to benefit The Kindness Collective. Guests of the event will be able to meet Steve-O, take a photo with the star, and have a copy of his book signed.
The December 3rd event will occur from 1 to 2pm in the loft of Busboys and Poets, located at 1025 5th St. NW DC. Free tickets may be obtained at http://guestli.st/78474 . An $8 donation is requested.
Donations will benefit The Kindness Collective’s work with domestic violence shelters to accommodate survivors’ pets. Up to 40% of domestic violence victims report that they are unable to escape their abusers because they are afraid of what will happen to their pets when they leave. The Kindness Collective hopes
to bring an end to the abuse by permitting victims of domestic violence to seek safety along with their pets.
Steve-O (a.k.a. Stephen Glover) was born in London and, by the age of twelve, had lived in five countries and communicated fluently in three different languages. He is a graduate of Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Clown College. Steve-O is currently on tour performing his comedy routine, which is a mix of stand-up, stunts and bar-tricks. Steve-O has been clean and sober since March of 2008 and lives a healthy, vegan lifestyle in the Los Angeles area.
